HB Group Dehumidification

Charity Motorcycle Ride for Red Nose Day

April 8th, 2009

In conjunction with Sainsburys Banbury Branch, HB Director Simon Mills (3rd from left) helped in organising a recent Charity motorcycle ride into North Wales and back. The idea put forward by Sainsbury Manager Steve Martin (far right) was for 100 motorcycles to each travel 350 miles and to raise sponsorship for Red Nose Day and Simon and Steve worked together on the planning of the route.

Despite the weather - which moved from season to season at 30 minute intervals for the entire length of the trip – a total of over £16,000 has so far been collected.

Spray Tower Drying – Production Improvements

March 18th, 2009

Using the revolutionary new and PATENTED PPX desiccant rotor technology, HB Group dehumidifiers have been successfully employed in the spray drying of milk.

Production rates for these types of product are traditionally variable between summer and winter due to the changes in ambient humidity. These changes lead to the need for more input from personnel with the necessary experience to determine the optimum flow rates and spray fittings for the best residence time of product in the drier – and this can be different from day to day.

By removing moisture to stable and CONSISTENT levels at or below 2g/kg (or the level determnined by product characteristics), AND WITHOUT THE USE OF ANY PRE-COOLING OF THE AIR, the drying capacity of the air and hence the tower can be maximised and maintained at the highest optimum levels for the entire year.

Simple dewpoint measurement of the air and control of the desiccant dehumidifier ensures these stable conditions are maintained at all times.

With the use of this PPX desiccant rotor technology, the amount of moisture removed can be more than 13-14g/kg from the highest summer ambients. Due to the physics of moisture removal, the recovery of  the latent heat of evaporation through the desiccant rotor media leads to a considerable rise in dry bulb temperature, with the dehumidified air leaving at 70°C or more.

This additional heat (effectively a by-product of the dehumidification process) reduces the demand on the post heater and leads to energy savings in the overall process.

The nett reult is a stable manufacturing environment, improved and constant productivity throughout the whole year, and a reduction in overall energy costs.

Machines have been manufactured and installed handling as much as 125,000kg/hr of process air, with desiccant rotor diameters of 4.5m. These rotors are currently available up to 5m in diameter.

New and Patented Rotor Technology

March 18th, 2009

The HB Group can now incorporate revolutionary PPX desiccant rotor technology from the most advnaced rotor factory in the world. This new PATENTED technology offers the ability to achieve moisture removal figures in excess of 13g/kg from an ambient source IN A SINGLE PASS through the desiccant dehumidifier and WITHOUT the need for pre-cooling of the air stream.

The product has already found a niche market application in the spray drying of milk for milk powder and infant formula, where the high temperature gain associated with high levels of moisture removal AND the low final moisture content of the air  simultaneously control production throughput at stable levels all year AND give energy savings to the entire process.

The rotor itself is a further development of the immensely successful ’standard’ PPS desiccant rotor technology and is the only desiccant rotor of its’ type to hold a patent for the method of construction.

Not only is the desiccant rotor so much more efficient at the removal of moisture, but the premium on cost of the rotor element itself is as little as 5%.

Available in desiccant rotor diameters up to 5m in diameter and currently installed as large as 4.5m, handling 125,000kg/hr of process air stream.
